Emax veneers in the UK: material, cost, preparation and lifespan

Reviewed by Dr Adib Alalawy (GDC 76672) · Pricing last verified 2026-09-16

Quick answer

Emax veneers are thin porcelain facings made from IPS e.max lithium disilicate, a pressed glass ceramic, bonded to the front of the teeth to change their shape, colour, alignment and proportion. They are used because the material is strong enough to be made thin while still transmitting light like natural enamel. Suitability is decided by the treating dentist in person.

Key facts

Material
IPS e.max — a lithium disilicate glass ceramic, made by Ivoclar. It is a type of dental porcelain.
Why it is used
High strength for its thickness, plus light transmission close to natural enamel, which allows conservative thin veneers.
UK package price
Fixed price smile makeover packages from £3,000 through Fix My Smile partner clinics — advertised prices, subject to clinical assessment.
Preparation
Conservative, case dependent reshaping of the front surface where clinically required. Any enamel removed is permanent.
Lifespan
Commonly around 10–15 years, often longer, depending on bite, grinding, gum health and maintenance.
What it treats
Colour, shape, size, minor rotations, small gaps, worn or chipped edges.
What it does not treat
Active decay, gum disease or significant crowding — these are addressed first, sometimes with orthodontics.
Who decides suitability

What are Emax veneers?

An Emax veneer is a custom made ceramic facing bonded to the front surface of a tooth. It does not encase the whole tooth the way a crown does, so it can usually be made with far less alteration to the underlying tooth.

Each veneer is designed for the individual tooth from impressions or a digital scan, made by a dental technician, then bonded by the dentist with an adhesive cement. Because the bond relies on enamel, preserving enamel matters both for the appearance and for how long the restoration lasts.

"Emax veneers" and "porcelain veneers" are not competing options: Emax is one of the porcelains UK clinics most often use for veneers.

What IPS e.max lithium disilicate actually is

IPS e.max is a brand name from the dental materials manufacturer Ivoclar, not a clinical abbreviation. The veneers are pressed or milled from lithium disilicate, a glass ceramic that is fired and glazed by the technician.

Compared with older feldspathic porcelains, lithium disilicate offers greater strength at a similar thickness, which is what makes conservative, thin veneers practical rather than fragile. It also transmits light in a way that resembles natural enamel, so the finished tooth reads as translucent at the edge rather than flat and opaque.

How much do Emax veneers cost in the UK?

Individual Emax veneers are commonly quoted in the UK from several hundred pounds up to around £1,200 per tooth, depending on the clinic, the ceramist and the case. Through Fix My Smile, Emax minimal prep veneers are priced as a smile makeover package instead, with fixed price packages from £3,000.

The package covers the veneers, the laboratory work, fitting at the partner clinic and a UK warranty on the veneers — 1 year with Essential, 5 years with Premium and 10 years with Signature, subject to the full warranty terms. These are advertised package prices subject to clinical assessment; any preparatory treatment such as hygiene, gum treatment or fillings is quoted separately by the treating clinic.

Monthly finance is available on the clinic's existing terms, over 3 to 60 months and subject to status. Fix My Smile is not the treating clinic and does not provide the credit agreement.

Emax compared with other veneer porcelains

Not all porcelain veneers are the same material. Feldspathic porcelain is layered by hand and can be exceptional aesthetically in skilled hands, but it is more brittle at thin sections. Zirconia is stronger in raw flexural strength and is often chosen for crowns and bridges, but it is more opaque, so it is less commonly the first choice for thin front veneers.

None of these is universally better. The material is a clinical decision made case by case, based on the starting tooth colour, the bite and how much space is available.

Emax veneers versus composite bonding

Composite bonding is applied and shaped directly on the tooth in a single appointment, usually with little or no preparation. It costs less, can often be added to or repaired, and is the more conservative starting point for smaller changes.

The trade offs are stain resistance and maintenance: resin picks up stain and loses surface polish over time, and typically needs refreshing or replacing more often than porcelain. Emax suits full smile designs intended to last many years; composite suits smaller corrections and tighter budgets.

Do Emax veneers require shaving the teeth?

In most cases some reshaping of the front surface is needed so the veneer sits flush and does not look bulky at the gum line. The minimal prep approach means removing only as much as the case clinically requires and keeping enamel wherever possible — it does not mean no preparation at all.

Any enamel that is removed does not grow back, so this is a permanent alteration and should be treated as a long term commitment. Genuinely no prep cases exist but are a narrow subset, usually small or slightly worn teeth that only need adding to. Nobody can tell you which category you are in from a photograph.

Advantages and important considerations

Emax veneers are a well established restoration with a clear set of benefits and an equally clear set of trade offs. Both belong in the same conversation before treatment starts.

How long do Emax veneers last?

Well made, well maintained Emax veneers commonly last around 10–15 years, and often longer. Lifespan is decided less by the ceramic than by everything around it: how much healthy enamel the veneer is bonded to, whether the bite loads the veneer edges, whether the patient grinds, and how well the gums and margins are maintained.

Veneers do not usually fail suddenly. The common endpoints are a chipped edge, a debond that can be re bonded, or a margin that becomes visible as the gum recedes over many years. Any of these is a reason to see the treating clinic promptly rather than wait.

Who may be suitable for Emax veneers?

Veneers sit on top of existing dental health; they do not fix it. Sound teeth, healthy gums, adequate enamel and realistic goals are the starting point. Where crowding or rotation is the main concern, moving the teeth first is often the more conservative route and can reduce how much preparation the veneers then need.

Suitability is never confirmed from photographs. The free WhatsApp e-consultation gives general guidance and indicative pricing only; the independent, GDC registered partner dentist confirms suitability in person after examination and, where indicated, radiographs.

What the Emax veneer process involves

Treatment coordinated by Fix My Smile typically runs over roughly three to four weeks across about six stages, though complex cases and any preparatory treatment extend that. Every clinical stage is carried out by the partner dentist at their own UK clinic.

What makes Emax veneers look natural

Natural results come from planning rather than from the ceramic alone. Tooth proportion, the curve of the smile line, how much tooth shows at rest, and a shade chosen against the patient's complexion all matter more than brightness.

A shade brighter than the whites of the eyes tends to read as artificial. Uniform, perfectly identical teeth do too — real teeth vary slightly in shape and translucency, and good technicians build that variation in.

Where Emax veneers are available

Treatment is carried out at independent, GDC registered partner clinics in the UK, so assessment, fitting, reviews and any warranty work all stay with the clinic that treated you rather than requiring travel abroad.

Material — Emax and alternatives

What are Emax veneers?

Emax veneers are thin restorations made from IPS e.max, a lithium disilicate glass ceramic. They are bonded to the front of the teeth to change shape, colour, alignment and proportion, and are valued for combining strength with a natural, light transmitting appearance.

What are Emax veneers? →

Are Emax veneers porcelain?

Yes. Emax is a dental porcelain — specifically a lithium disilicate glass ceramic. When UK clinics talk about porcelain veneers, Emax is one of the most commonly used materials.

What does Emax stand for?

Emax is a brand name (IPS e.max) from the dental materials manufacturer Ivoclar, not an abbreviation of a clinical term. It describes a family of lithium disilicate ceramics used for veneers, crowns and onlays.

How strong are Emax veneers?

Lithium disilicate is one of the stronger all ceramic materials used for veneers and is considerably more fracture resistant than traditional feldspathic porcelain. Once bonded to healthy enamel, the veneer and tooth behave as a single strong unit.

How long do Emax veneers last?

With good oral hygiene, regular check ups and protection against grinding, Emax veneers commonly last around 10–15 years or more. Lifespan depends on your bite, habits, gum health and how well the veneers are maintained.

How long do veneers last? →

Emax vs composite veneers — which is better?

Emax porcelain generally offers better stain resistance, longevity and light behaviour, while composite bonding is cheaper, faster and more easily repaired. Composite suits smaller changes and tighter budgets; Emax suits full smile designs intended to last many years.

Veneers vs composite bonding →

Emax vs zirconia — what is the difference?

Zirconia is stronger in raw flexural strength and is often chosen for crowns, bridges and heavy load situations, while Emax lithium disilicate is more translucent and usually looks more natural at the front of the mouth. For thin anterior veneers, Emax is the more common aesthetic choice.

Are Emax veneers better than traditional porcelain?

Emax is stronger than classic feldspathic porcelain and can be made thinner while remaining durable, which supports a minimal prep approach. Highly skilled feldspathic work can still be exceptional aesthetically, so material choice is a clinical decision made case by case.

Do Emax veneers stain?

Glazed Emax porcelain is highly stain resistant and does not discolour the way composite can. Staining is more likely at the margins or on adjacent natural teeth, which is why hygiene appointments matter after treatment.

Do Emax veneers look natural?

Yes, when well planned and well made. Lithium disilicate transmits light in a way that resembles natural enamel, so shade, translucency and surface texture can be matched to your face rather than producing a flat, uniform look.

Can Emax veneers chip or break?

Yes, like natural teeth they can chip or fracture, most often from grinding, biting hard objects or trauma. A night guard is commonly recommended if you clench or grind.

What to do if a veneer breaks →

How thin are Emax veneers?

Minimal prep Emax veneers are typically well under a millimetre thick — often described as being about as thin as a contact lens. The exact thickness is decided by the partner dentist based on your existing tooth position and the planned result.

Are Emax veneers metal free?

Yes. Emax is an all ceramic, metal free material, so there is no dark metal margin at the gum line as can occur with older metal backed restorations.

Can Emax veneers be whitened later?

No. Porcelain does not respond to whitening gel, so the shade is chosen before the veneers are made. If you want whiter natural teeth alongside veneers, whitening is normally done first.

What is the difference between veneers and crowns?

A veneer covers mainly the front surface of a tooth and preserves much more tooth structure, while a crown encases the whole tooth. Crowns are usually reserved for heavily filled, root treated or badly broken teeth.

How much do Emax veneers cost in the UK through Fix My Smile?

Emax minimal prep veneers are advertised as three fixed price smile makeover packages rather than a per tooth price: Essential from £3,000, Premium from £4,000 and Signature at £15,000, which is personally carried out by Dr Adib Al Alawy. All include the laboratory work and fitting at a UK partner clinic and are subject to clinical assessment; warranties on the veneers are 1 year with Essential, 5 years with Premium and 10 years with Signature, subject to the warranty terms.

Full UK veneer cost breakdown →

Are Emax veneers worth it?

That depends on what you want changed and whether your teeth are suitable. Emax suits patients wanting a lasting change to shape, colour and proportion who accept that some preparation is usually permanent; if the concern is only shade, whitening may be enough, and for small corrections composite bonding is more conservative.

Do Emax veneers require shaving your teeth?

Usually some conservative reshaping of the front surface is needed so the veneer sits flush rather than looking bulky. The minimal prep approach removes only what the case clinically requires; genuinely no prep cases exist but are a narrow subset, and only an in person assessment can tell which applies to you.

Minimal prep preparation explained →

Do Emax veneers damage your teeth?

Where preparation is needed, the enamel removed is permanent, which is why conservative preparation matters. Properly planned and well maintained veneers do not otherwise harm the underlying tooth, but poor margins, an unmanaged bite or lapsed hygiene can lead to decay or gum problems at the edges.

Can you have Emax veneers with gum disease?

Not until the gum disease is treated and stable. Veneers are placed onto existing dental health rather than fixing it, so the partner dentist will address gum inflammation, pockets or recession first — that treatment is quoted separately from the veneer package.
